The Placenames of Scotland (Paperback): Iain Taylor The Placenames of Scotland (Paperback)
Iain Taylor
R403 R364 Discovery Miles 3 640 Save R39 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Placenames are a constant source of debate. Who was Edwin, whose name is said to live on in that of Scotland's capital city? Are the 'drum' and 'chapel' still to be found in Drumchapel? And which 'king' had a 'seat' in Kingseat in Perthshire? The answers to these and many similar questions are often not what might be expected at first sight and have their origins in many languages - including Gaelic, Pictish, Brythonic, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Scots and Modern English - that have been spoken in Scotland. This is the essential companion to the fascinating world of Scottish placenames. It features more than 8,000 placenames, from districts, towns and villages to rivers, lochs and mountains, and also includes a comprehensive introduction and maps.

Sevenoaks 1790–1914 - Risk and choice in West Kent (Paperback): Iain Taylor, David Killingray Sevenoaks 1790–1914 - Risk and choice in West Kent (Paperback)
Iain Taylor, David Killingray
R473 Discovery Miles 4 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a fresh perspective on British history in the long nineteenth century through the lens of a study of Sevenoaks and the surrounding area of West Kent. It considers, in particular, how the risks faced by the people of this region, and the choices they made to try to mitigate them, shaped their lives and relationships. During a period of often dramatic change, the economic, social, political, religious and cultural interests of individuals were subject to different risk factors; the responses they made (and the reasons for those choices) provide valuable insights and enable the writing of highly nuanced local history. The authors pinpoint the fundamental risk factors affecting the lives of West Kent’s inhabitants (especially the poor): the struggle to obtain the four bare necessities of shelter, food, fuel and clothing, without which their survival was threatened. Other risks abounded too, from abysmal sanitary conditions and the dangers of giving birth, to industrial injuries and being a victim of crime. Secure work and strong family networks were essential to limiting risks – often forming part of the ‘makeshift economy’ – as well as charity, education, health insurance and access to medical care. For many, not all these options were available – or not until much later in the period. Choice was central to religious and political struggles. The examination of beliefs and values reveals the immense impact such issues had across West Kent society, and how and why it divided as a direct result. Finally, the authors consider the advent of motor vehicles, which combined both risk and choice in exciting but potentially dangerous ways. This innovative approach provides a fruitful new way of writing history and offers a model for future local history studies.

Barn Owls - Predator-Prey Relationships and Conservation (Paperback, Revised): Iain Taylor Barn Owls - Predator-Prey Relationships and Conservation (Paperback, Revised)
Iain Taylor
R2,082 Discovery Miles 20 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When seen hunting over a meadow, barn owls have an ethereal grace and beauty that can be matched by no other bird. The barn owl has an almost global distribution and has lived in close proximity to humans since settlement and farming created the forest clearings needed for hunting and places in which to nest. However, in many countries, barn owl numbers are falling rapidly. This book explores the relationships between barn owls and their prey worldwide, and demonstrates how an understanding of such relationships can help in the conservation of the species. In this comprehensive account, Iain Taylor describes the biology and ecology of this species, including the factors affecting breeding success, and causes of mortality affecting the final recruitment of new birds into the population. He concludes by suggesting ways in which we can manage and conserve this beautiful bird for the future.

Genetically Engineered Crops - Interim Policies, Uncertain Legislation (Hardcover): Iain Taylor Genetically Engineered Crops - Interim Policies, Uncertain Legislation (Hardcover)
Iain Taylor
R3,576 Discovery Miles 35 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Take a closer look at the questions surrounding the long-term impact of GE crops Genetically Engineered Crops examines current controversies surrounding the potential health, environmental, and social impacts of plants produced using molecular biology techniques. Educators, professionals, and practitioners representing a wide range of disciplines, including plant biotechnology, environmental health risk assessment, law, food safety assessment, and bio safety, address the uncertainties of the science, biological risks, national and international governance issues in North and South America, Europe, and Africa, and the need for full public understanding of genetically engineered crops. Proper regulation of food requires a broad understanding of the science and of varying public perceptions of the technology that will lead to effective governance. Genetically Engineered Crops examines ecological, health, and environmental concerns about crop genetic engineering, the need for precaution, biosafety, and liability, and the challenges faced in meeting the public's demands for proper understanding of the risks involved. With no worldwide framework for regulation in place and public concern about food safety growing, this vital book takes a closer look at the long-term impact of GE crops and their place in the future of agriculture. Genetically Engineered Crops examines: the laboratory hazards of gene splicing environmental releases of GEOs the loss of agrobiodiversity the ecological effects of HRCs ecological and environmental risk assessment of GE crops human health implications of GE foods allergenicity and toxicity the precautionary principle international trade and regulatory harm smart regulations in Canada shortcomings in risk assessment liability and compensation and much more Genetically Engineered Crops is a vital reference resource for anyone working in the plant and crop sciences, the social sciences, national and international bioregulation, environmental law, and agribusiness.

Media Materialities - Form, Format, and Ephemeral Meaning (New edition): Iain Taylor, Oliver Carter Media Materialities - Form, Format, and Ephemeral Meaning (New edition)
Iain Taylor, Oliver Carter
R2,848 Discovery Miles 28 480 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Provides new perspectives on the increasingly complex relationships between media forms and formats, materiality, and meaning. Drawing on a range of qualitative methodologies, our consideration of the materiality of media is structured around three overarching concepts: form – the physical qualities of objects and the meanings which extend from them; format – objects considered in relation to the protocols which govern their use, and the meanings and practices which stem from them; and ephemeral meaning – the ways in which media artefacts are captured, transformed, and redefined through changing social, cultural, and technological values. Each section includes empirical chapters which provide expansive discussions of perspectives on media and materiality. It considers a range of media artefacts such as 8mm film, board games maps, videogames, cassette tapes, transistor radios and Twitter, amongst others. These are punctuated with a number of short takes – less formal, often personal takes exploring the meanings of media in context. We seek to consider the materialities which emerge across the broad and variegated range of the term’s use, and to create spaces for conversation and debate about the implications that this plurality of material meanings might have for the study of study of media, culture, and society.

Pannenberg on the Triune God (Hardcover): Iain Taylor Pannenberg on the Triune God (Hardcover)
Iain Taylor
R6,675 Discovery Miles 66 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Iain Taylor treats Pannenberg's stated ambition to write 'a theology more thoroughly Trinitarian than any I know of'. It evaluates it by answering two questions: What does Pannenberg mean by his theology being thoroughly Trinitarian? How far has his subsequent work, especially Systematic Theology, been successful in realizing his stated goal?
